I did not choose art so much as art chose me - quietly, insistently, across all continents in a lifetime of travel and borderless curiosity. As a child I used to sketch and draw with pencil and charcoal but it was not until much later through a Master of Arts in Art History in Singapore that I found myself at an intersection of geography, culture and visual language. My thesis examined notions of cultural hybridity, identity and difference and defining change and image in contemporary Vietnamese art post the ‘doi-moi’ era. I found myself profoundly moved by the different works of the artists I explored in Hanoi, their lives and culture, prompting an unexpected exploration of my own identity and what it means to create from a life influenced by many cultures.
This eventually led me to taking fine art courses first at the “Accademia Del Giglio” in Florence, Italy followed by various courses in Greece. Here, I learnt and came to understand that my own art is simply an attempt to hold onto what I know I cannot keep like fresh, colourful flowers in a vase, a special light over a sea-or landscape or a fleeting sense of belonging somewhere extraordinary.
Having travelled extensively throughout my life I find myself endlessly inspired especially by the vivid colours of places like Hawaii, Indonesia, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma and the hues of blue in the wild Arctic and Antarctic landscapes.
These not only carry a memory of rare stillness but also of a specific light reminding me how small and how alive one can feel at once.
Now living in beautiful Switzerland I find myself immersed in nature and all it has to offer. Painting flowers and landscapes brings me endless joy which I hope to express in my work. My preferred medium is acrylic and I am happy to take on commissions.
I continue to travel, to look and to paint - following curiosity wherever it leads next - one brushstroke at a time.
